New farmers foundation supports deforestation-free products in Indonesia
JAKARTA — A new foundation has been established to support Indonesian farmers in protecting forests and selling their sustainably produced products to the global market. The foundation, called the Farmers For Forest Protection Foundation (4F), was established by the association of Indonesian palm oil farmers, or SPKS. This makes 4F the only foundation platform in Indonesia to be formed by and for farmers. The idea behind the foundation comes from the increasing market demand for Indonesian products that are deforestation-free and sustainable, according to SPKS secretary-general Mansuetus Alsy Hanu, known by his nickname, Darto. The European Union, for instance, recently adopted a regulation that bans the trade of commodities, such as rubber and palm oil, that come from deforested areas and illegal sources. Jakarta – The Oil Palm Smallholders Union (Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit/SPKS) officially launch the Farmers For Forest Protection Foundation (4F) in Jakarta. The initiative, developed in collaboration with smallholders and local and indigenous communities from various regions in Indonesia, aims to promote responsible deforestation-free practices that enhance the welfare of small farmers and indigenous groups. In a written statement, the foundation’s said its formation comes in response to the increasing demand for Indonesian products that are not only free from deforestation but also support forest conservation and sustainability principles. Smallholder farmers in Indonesia require strong support from various stakeholders, including the government and market players, to continue their efforts effectively. Indonesia’s smallholder union (SKPS) has established a foundation to help farmers comply with new regulations that aim to weed deforestation out of global supply chains. The Farmers For Forest Protection Foundation (4F), announced at an event in Jakarta on Tuesday (1 August), was developed to support forest conservation and responsible deforestation-free practices that improve the welfare of smallholder farmers and rural communities. Mansuetus Alsy Hanu, secretary-general of SKPS, said that the launch of the foundation was timely as oil palm smallholders need support to cultivate their crops while protecting forests. Smallholders have expressed concern that they will be unable to meet the requirements of the newly introduced European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which requires farmers to provide evidence that their crop was grown without cutting forests. The foundation will provide both monetary and non-monetary support to farmers, including how to follow deforestation-free and sustainable best practices. Suara.com – Pada hari ini, Yayasan Petani Pelindung Hutan (Farmers For Forests Protection Foundation / 4F) telah resmi diluncurkan oleh Serikat Petani Kelapa Sawit (SPKS) di Jakarta, bersama para petani dan komunitas masyarakat lokal/adat dari sejumlah wilayah di Indonesia. Yayasan Petani Pelindung Hutan atau 4F merupakan satu satunya inisiatif yang dibentuk oleh dan untuk petani kecil di Indonesia yang dikembangkan untuk tujuan mengelola dan menyalurkan pendanaan, mengelola program, monitor dan melaporkan dampak program dalam rangka mendukung konservasi hutan serta praktek yang bertanggung-jawab dan bebas deforestasi untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan petani kecil dan masyarakat lokal/adat.
