Sukamara Regency is a community-based conservation landscape in Central Kalimantan where partner villages actively protect forests, strengthen customary values, and promote sustainable natural resource management.
Sukamara Regency is one of the regions in Central Kalimantan that still retains important forest landscapes, customary territories, and areas with significant conservation value. Local communities in the region continue to preserve traditional knowledge, cultural values, and sustainable environmental practices that contribute to the protection of forest ecosystems and biodiversity.
Through collaboration with the Farmers For Forest Protection Foundation (4F), several assisted villages in Sukamara Regency, including Nibung Terjun Village, Semantun Village, Kenawan Village, and Kartamulia Village, have strengthened their shared commitment to protecting forests and promoting sustainable natural resource management. These villages actively participate in community-based conservation initiatives aimed at preventing deforestation, protecting customary forests, and supporting environmentally friendly village development.
The partnership encourages participatory forest governance through community monitoring, forest patrols, environmental education, capacity building for farmers and Indigenous Peoples, and strengthening customary institutions. Collaborative programs are also implemented to support sustainable agriculture, alternative livelihoods, and community empowerment initiatives that integrate local wisdom with conservation approaches.
By promoting inclusive participation and respecting customary values, Sukamara Regency continues to demonstrate the importance of community-led conservation efforts in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the sustainability of forest landscapes for future generations. These initiatives also contribute to strengthening social resilience, environmental awareness, and sustainable village development across the region.
