Technical training on HCS-HCV components Trainer

  1. Background

Farmers for Forest Protection Foundation (4F) is the only platform established by and for smallholder, local communities, and indigenous peoples in Indonesia. 4F acts as a bridge between farmers and markets, producers, government, and other stakeholders committed to sustainability and reducing inequality. 4F's main activities are managing, distributing, monitoring, and reporting on the efficient use of funds to support indigenous/local communities and smallholder who are working to conserve forests.

Through support from the Ford Foundation and the Ministry of Home Affairs, 4F provides “Support for Smallholder and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Kalimantan for Strengthening Land Rights, Inclusion in Decision-Making, Economic Benefits, Fair Access, and Readiness for the Global Market.” In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ford Foundation dated April 4, 2024, the 4F program is in line with the theme of “Participatory, equitable, and sustainable governance and utilization of natural resources by community groups and the poor to improve people's welfare and mitigate the impacts of climate change.”

4F is committed to supporting the strengthening of equitable and sustainable landscape governance, including ensuring a balance between forest protection, improving the welfare of smallholder, and compliance with global regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This requires a Technical Training on HCS-HCV Components Trainer who is capable of providing technical training on HCS–HCV (High Stock Carbon-High Conservation Value) in the Village Capacity Building and Institutional Development program.

  • Activity Objectives

The objective of this activity is to increase the institutional capacity of villages, including smallholders, local communities, indigenous peoples, and women's groups, to gain access to and inclusive involvement in institutional governance and the sustainable management of forests and natural resources.

  • Scope of Work

The trainer will carry out the following scope of work:

  1. Develop a curriculum and training modules related to HCS and HCV components relevant to the village context based on the simplified HCS-HCV toolkit for farmers.
  2. Conduct technical training with community groups and village institutions on the identification, mapping, and management of HCS–HCV areas.
  3. Provide practical assistance in field activities such as HCS-HCV identification, field observation, and basic mapping techniques.
  4. Develop tools and visual materials to facilitate understanding among participants from various backgrounds.
  5. Test participants' abilities through pre/post-training evaluations and technical feedback.
  6. Provide recommendations for strengthening village institutions related to the protection of HCS-HCV areas.
  7. Compile training reports covering the process, achievements, challenges, and recommendations for continuation.
  8. Coordinate with program teams such as village facilitators, spatial teams, and program and 4F management to integrate training results into village work plans.
  • Implementation Methode

The methodologies used include:

  1. Development of HCS-HCV technical modules based on a simplified HCS-HCV toolkit for farmers.
  2. Theory Classes (In-Class Training)
  3. Field Practicum (Field-based Training)
  4. Evaluation (pre- and post-tests, participant feedback)
  • Deliverables

The expected outcome is that representatives from each institution in six villages in Sanggau, Sekadau, and Sintang districts receive training to improve their technical capacity in implementing HCS-HCV practices.

  • Trainer Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Developing a training plan that includes objectives, learning outcomes, methodology, material flow, and logistical requirements.
  2. Developing a detailed agenda of activities and training session plans.
  3. Identifying training facility requirements such as presentation aids, modules, and field materials.
  4. Deliver material interactively through presentations, group discussions, case studies, and technical simulations.
  5. Facilitate participants' understanding of: a). Identification and mapping of HCS and HCV areas; b). Deforestation risk analysis; c). Field data collection techniques; d). Development of management and protection plans.
  6. Leading field training sessions, including demonstrations of: a). the HCS–HCV verification process; b). Introduction to ecosystems and identification of conservation values; c). Biophysical measurement and observation.
  7. Developing pre-tests and post-tests to measure participants' capacity building.
  8. Preparing training evaluation reports that include: a). Analysis of participants' capacity; b). Learning outcomes; c). Recommendations for follow-up.
  • Duration

This activity was carried out over a period of three months, with the following details:

Month 1: Compilation of HCS-HCV technical materials for training

Month 2: HCS-HCV theory and field practice training

Month 3: Compilation of activity reports

  • Qualification

The required qualifications are:

  1. Minimum bachelor's degree in Forestry, Environment, Biodiversity Conservation, Geography, or related fields.
  2. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in technical training, landscape management, conservation, or community capacity building.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of HCS and HCV concepts and methodologies.
  4. Understanding of landscape management, village governance, and forest protection contexts.
  5. Ability to develop training modules and deliver material clearly to various levels of understanding.
  6. Ability to speak the local language to support interaction with the community is an added value.

Reporting is done periodically according to the established schedule (inception, mid-term, final report).
