Facilitator Agroforestry

  1. Background

Farmers for Forest Protection Foundation (4F) is the only platform established by and for smallholder, local communities, and indigenous peoples in Indonesia. 4F acts as a bridge between smallholders and markets, producers, government, and other stakeholders committed to sustainability and reducing inequality. 4F's main activities are managing, distributing, monitoring, and reporting on the efficient use of funds to support indigenous/local communities and smallholder who are working to conserve forests.

Through support from the Ford Foundation and the Ministry of Home Affairs, 4F provides “Support for Smallholder Farmers and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in Kalimantan for Strengthening Land Rights, Inclusion in Decision-Making, Economic Benefits, Fair Access, and Readiness for the Global Market”. In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ford Foundation dated April 4, 2024, the 4F program is in line with the theme of “Participatory, equitable, and sustainable governance and utilization of natural resources by community groups and the poor to improve people's welfare and mitigate the impacts of climate change.”

4F is committed to supporting the strengthening of equitable and sustainable landscape governance, including ensuring a balance between forest protection, improving the welfare of smallholder, and compliance with global regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This requires Agroforestry Facilitators who are able to provide technical assistance on agroforestry and improve farmers' capacity in inclusive support and sustainable agricultural practices.

  • Activity Objectives

The objective of this activity is to promote inclusive sustainable agriculture by improving the capacity of women, youth, farmer cooperatives, and village institutions in climate-smart agriculture, agroforestry, and forest resource management practices.

  • Scope of Work

Agroforestry Facilitators will carry out the following scope of work:

  1. Facilitate farmers in designing, developing, and implementing agroforestry models that are appropriate to local conditions
  2. Assist in the process of land preparation, planting, maintenance, and evaluation of plant growth
  3. Organize agroforestry training and field practice
  • Implementation Methode

The methodologies used include:

  1. Participatory and Community-Based Approach (Participatory Rural Approach)
  2. Demonstration Plots (Demplots) and Learning by Doing
  3. Regular mentoring
  • Deliverables

The expected outputs from the agroforestry facilitator are:

  1. All farmers and village communities, including women, in the 9 program villages (West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan) have undergone training
    1. Establishment of 1 demonstration plot in each of the 9 program villages based on the designed agroforestry system
    1. Activity reports on training and monitoring of agroforestry demonstration plots
  • Facilitator Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assist farmers in the planning, design, and implementation of agroforestry systems (multistrata, intercropping, forestry-agriculture)
  2. Identifying land, analyzing biophysical conditions, and farmers' technical needs
  3. Developing thematic training materials
  4. Ensuring that training activities are inclusive and easily understood by all participants
  5. Assisting farmers in developing work plans and schedules for planting, maintenance, and harvesting activities
  6. Compiling activity reports, including achievements, challenges, and recommendations
  7. Conducting intensive coordination with the 4F team, district government, and other stakeholders.
  • Duration

This activity will be carried out over a period of 4 months with the following details:

Month 1              : Compilation of agroforestry materials for training

Month 2               : Agroforestry training and creation of agroforestry demonstration plots

Months 3-4        : Regular mentoring of agroforestry demonstration plots

  • Qualification

The required qualifications are:

  1. Minimum D3/S1 degree in: Forestry, Agronomy, Agriculture, Agroecology, Natural Resource Management, or a relevant field.
  2. Minimum 3-5 years of experience in assisting farmers, forestry/agricultural crop cultivation, agroforestry, or community empowerment programs
  3. Experience in building demonstration plots, field schools, or other field practices
  4. Experience working with village communities, indigenous peoples, or vulnerable groups is an added value.
  5. Proficient in the basics of agroforestry: species selection, planting distance, soil and water conservation, forestry and agricultural crop maintenance.
  • Reporting Mechanism

Agroforestry Facilitators report to: 4F Program Manager

Copies to: Executive Director, District Coordinator, 4F Technical Advisor

Reporting is done periodically according to the established schedule (inception, mid-term, final report).

  1. Ethics & Confidentiality

Agroforestry Facilitators are required to maintain the confidentiality of all data obtained during their assignment and comply with organizational and donor policies.

This Terms of Reference has been prepared as the basis for the implementation of activities in support of the objectives of the Forest Protector Farmers Foundation (4F) program.
